Wedding Dates and Superstitions
As if you didn't already have enough to worry about! When it comes to getting everything right for your wedding, you want it all to be perfect, from the dress to the bridesmaid gifts to the day itself. But you're not the only one!
Maybe you're settling for just picking a day, crossing your fingers and hoping it doesn't rain, but did you know that there's a long tradition of superstitions revolving around the month, day, and even the year you choose to hold your wedding in?
If you've ever wondered why so many weddings take place in June (miniature fans as bridesmaid gifts, anyone?), this old rhyme might help explain why:
Married in January's hoar and rime, Widowed you'll be before your prime.
Married in February's sleepy weather, Life you'll tread in time together.
Married when March winds shrill and roar, Your home will be on a distant shore.
Married beneath April's changing skies, A checkered path before you lies.
Married when bees over May blossoms flit, Strangers around your board will sit.
Married in the month of roses; June, Life will be one long honeymoon.
Married in July with flowers ablaze, Bittersweet memories on after days.
Married in August's heat and drowse, Lover and friend in your chosen spouse.
Married in September's golden glow, Smooth and serene your life will go.
Married when leaves in October thin, Toil and hardship for you gain.
Married in veils of November mist, Fortune your wedding ring has kissed.
Married in days of December cheer, Love's star shines brighter from year to year.
Moral of the story: some superstitions are completely random and based on nursery rhymes. Get married in June for the fine weather (if you're in the northern hemisphere, at least), and happily hand out sandals to dance in outside for your favorite ladies as bridesmaid gifts.
Don't like leaving anything to chance? Here's a list of lucky days to hold weddings:
January: 2, 4, 11, 19, 21.
February: 1, 3, 10, 19, 21.
March: 3, 5, 13, 20, 23.
April: 2, 4, 12, 20, 22.
May: 2, 4, 12, 20, 23.
June: 1, 3, 11, 19, 21.
July: 1, 3, 12, 19, 21, 31.
August: 2, 11, 18, 20, 30.
September: 1, 9, 16, 18, 28.
October: 1, 8, 15, 17, 27, 29.
November: 5, 11, 13, 22, 25.
December: 1, 8, 10, 19, 23, 29.
But don't stop there! (At this rate, you'll be giving out calendars as bridesmaid gifts to your unmarried bridesmaids!) Consult the old rhyme for recommendations on the best day of the week to wed:
Monday for wealth,
Tuesday for health,
Wednesday the best day of all.
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
And Saturday no luck at all.
It may seem silly, but why try your luck on one of the most important days of your life? Of course, the only thing sillier would be taking advice from nursery rhymes, or random lists of lucky days.
In the end, the only thing that matters is that it's the right day for you, your future husband, your family and your friends. There's no need to let superstition interfere with your special day!
