Mood Lighting: Five chic and cheap centerpiece ideas

Picture skeleton keys and crystals dangling from snow-covered branches. White gardenias suspended over turquoise water.  Heart-shaped candles casting a wonderful glow on the bride and groom. Centerpieces: More challenging than finding 30 individual bridesmaid gifts. But oh so important in adding drama and flair to your wedding day decor.

Most brides don't have time or the artistic ability to craft amazing centerpieces. And many florists overcharge for garden variety works of art. Have an idea in mind before you set out on the centerpiece search. Avoid over spending on towering centerpieces that will wind up in the trash the next day. You still have to get those little extras like favors and bridesmaid gifts! Luckily for you, the current trend is fresh and simple.

Here are five thrifty centerpiece trends:

Submerged Flowers: One of prettiest centerpieces that "emerged" in the past few years. Submerged flowers can look trendy and sophisticated or like an alien stuck in a bottle. If you try and  attempt submerged flowers yourself, you run the risk that the flower will turn brown and die or float to the top. It's best to consult a florist or use silk flowers. But beware: Some wedding guests can spot silks from a mile away. Scatter tea lights around the table for a gentle wedding glow. (Photo from Trendsetting Wedding).

Shimmer of Silver: During wintertime, many flowers go out of season, thereby raising the cost of centerpieces. For a chic and cheap idea, spray paint branches and flower pots with shimmery silver or glittery blue. Hang ornaments, keys, and crystals from the branches. Make sure your arrangement dries first!

Edgy and Eclectic: Scour thrift stores for vintage vases and cylinders to make one-of-a-kind, bo-ho chic centerpieces. If you're really daring, buy several unique tea pots and put one on each table with a flower arrangement inside. Give these tea pots to your guests along with personalized tea infusers, cocoa wedding favors, or personalized hershey kisses. You can also get a similar trend-setting look with a vintage jewelry box. (Tea-pot Centerpiece from My Coin Purse).

Tuity Fruity Trend: Spring is just around the corner! Fresh fruits submerged in a cylinder add drama and flair to long, square tables. Think lemons and limes, obviously not fruits that go bad quickly such as bananas and apples. Add fresh blossoms with different textures: long grasses, maiden fern, or Queen Anne's Lace. Or use the limes in the bottom half and add flowers to the top.

Turn up the Contrast: This spring, brides will go wild with color. Don't be afraid to do the same with your wedding centerpieces! But instead of bright-blue or hot-pink flowers, add the color to the water or beads instead. Be careful though. Use the right food coloring so that your flowers don't change colors. Lily white blooms or candles over vibrant blue water looks amazing! You can easily do this trick with just about any color - except chocolate brown. Yuk.

Commission your bridesmaid (hint: get good bridesmaid gifts) and groom to help with the centerpieces. If you're taking the do-it-yourself plunge, create a prototype well ahead of time.
