Rain on your Wedding Day: Six Silly Superstitions

If it pours on your wedding day and your chic coiffe turns into a frizzy French twist, consider it good luck. When you're drenched in your white wedding gown, it's hard to see it as a good omen but according to tradition, the more rain the better the marriage. Another fun wedding fact - in the old days bridesmaids had a much bigger role -- they warded off evil spirits! For good karma and to keep bad spirits away, shower your bridesmaids with bridesmaid gifts or give out lucky wedding favors like this wooden elephant.

The Crying Bride - It's good luck for the bride to cry on her wedding day. Wear waterproof mascara and don't be afraid to shed some tears. As long as you cry tears of joy, it's a good omen. If you're sobbing because you don't want to get married, well that's a different story.

Rain on Your Wedding Day - If the forecast calls for rain on your wedding day, consider yourself a lucky bride. Not only does rain symbolize good luck, it sets the scene for dramatic wedding photos. Other historically good omens include seeing a black cat, a rainbow, or meeting a chimney sweep.

Ripped Dress = Death? This is one of the most gruesome superstitions. It is said that if a bride rips her dress the day of the wedding, her marriage will result in death. Carry this wedding day survival kit just in case this happens to you.

Bridesmaid Dresses Cut from the Same Cloth - Who made it a rule that all the bridesmaids have to match? This superstition goes way back, so unfortunately you can't yell at the person who made you pick out one bridesmaid dress for six girls. Long ago, the bride walked to church with her entourage and it was thought that if everyone matched, evil spirits couldn't find and kidnap her. Yikes! Thankfully, now bridesmaids can wear different colored dresses coordinated with bridesmaid jewelry. Evil spirits haven't kidnapped any brides recently, so let's put this tradition to rest.

Don't Trip Over the Threshold - In the olden days, the groom carried the bride over the threshold to protect her from evil demons  that might try to pull her under. A lot of superstitions come from evil spirits trying to kidnap the bride. Is evil spirit a code word for jealous ex?

Good Timing -  When it comes to weddings, timing is everything. In English folklore, Wednesday is the best day for weddings and Saturday is the unluckiest wedding day. If you're getting married in September, consider yourself lucky because when you "marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine." And it's good luck to get married when the second hand sweeps upward, not downward so get married at 2:30, not 2:00.
