Wedding Records: World's Longest Wedding Dress and More
You think you have the most expensive wedding dress, biggest cake, or the longest train? Think again. Most weddings pale in comparison to these over-the-top nuptials. From the biggest wedding party (heaven help them when it comes to bridesmaid gifts) to a towering cake (and we mean towering), these record-breaking weddings take tying the knot to a new level.
New Record! Longest Wedding Dress
Romania recently broke the record for the World's Longest Wedding Dress at Bucharest's E-Marriage Fest wedding fair April 3, 2009. It measures a magnificent 5,180 feet of spun, Swarovski-studded tulle. Designed by Romanian designer Ioana Comanescu, this wedding dress and train would cost $6,000. And the price tag isn't the only hefty thing about this gown. It's so heavy, it would be every bridesmaid's worst nightmare.
WeddingStand Hint: If you have a dress so big it could be seen from space, make sure you have enough bridesmaids to carry it. Don't forget to them properly for the heavy lifting with bridesmaid gifts!
It Takes the Cake
We've seen a lot of wedding cakes, but none can top this towering treat! The World's Biggest wedding cake weighed more than 15,000 pounds and it took two forklifts to raise each tier. The wedding cake weighed more than five Volkswagen Beetles and could feed up to 59,000 people. That's a lot of cake. For some reason, it's hard to picture the bride and groom freezing the top tier and eating it on their one-year anniversary.
WeddingStand Hint: To save money, have a small cake and several sheet cakes in the back. None will be the wiser.
Oldest Bride and Bridesmaid
Minnie Munro was 102 when she said "I do," making her the World's Oldest Bride. Munro is proof that love can find you at any age. The oldest bridesmaid (unrelated to the oldest bride) ever to stand up in a wedding was Edith Gulliford at 105. We wonder what the bride gave her as a bridesmaid gift - a hip replacement? What a friend!
Most Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
When professional record-breaker Suresh Joachim married his wife Christa, 79 bridesmaids and 47 groomsmen witnessed the nuptials. The couple broke the world record for the highest number of each at one ceremony. That's a lot of bridesmaid gifts and groomsmen gifts! We're sure the couple didn't opt for personalized gifts. Fact: The average wedding party size is five on each side.
Most Ridiculously Expensive Wedding Ever
The most expensive wedding was a 1981 soiree hosted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, ruler of Dubai and Princess Salama. The wedding would cost 100-million today, if you factor in inflation. The venue was a 20,000-person stadium built especially for the shindig. Can you imagine filling out the invitations or seating arrangements (shudder)?
WeddingStand Hint: Don't let your guest list get out of control. Keep costs low by inviting only those you want at the party. We're sure the bride and groom of this world-record party didn't know every one of their 20,000 guests.
Now it's your turn to break a record: Have the best night of your life.
